Kinja'd!!!

A friend of mine ordered a GT350 forever ago (11 months) and it finally came in. I was so excited to go for a ride in it and hear that flat plane crank up close. Maybe I could talk him into driving it...

When he ordered it, they said it would be at MSRP. Super.
When he went to pick it up they now tell him there is a $30K markup. Nope.

So if you want a beautiful GT350 and willing to pay $30K above sticker, there’s one available in San Diego.

Damn stealerships.

[EDIT: Previously reported as a GT350R. He decided at some point to “just” get the GT350 and never notified me because these are things I must know.]

UPDATE: He found one on the east coast from a dealer willing to play ball.

I feel like a tweet to Ford about the situation (especially gross, given that he ordered the car...) might get some wheels rolling.

I don’t know GT350R prices but what was the final price w/mark up?

Uhhh. yeah. If he ordered the car and has a price on whatever invoice I assume he put a downpayment on, the car should be at the agreed upon price.

Kinja'd!!!6

Yea. I don’t know what the language was on the order (or if there was a deposit, etc.), but a “market adjustment” of that nature (50%?) is a bit extreme, especially given the wait. Now I’ll sit and wait for all the Oppo salespeople to come in and explain how this is a totally legitimate normal way of doing business, and your friend should be happy to pay the extra cost.

I think that I would go to another dealership and make a new deal. Unless there is something different about factory-ordered cars, different dealerships transfer cars between them when they have a buyer. Wouldn’t it be be fun to buy the exact car from another Ford dealer for the agreed upon price and deny this original dealer the sale?

This is how I got my Riviera. The lot where it was sitting (in Ypsituckey) wanted a big markup. I drove in to Livonia, got the car with that exact VIN transferred over to the dealer there, and bought the car for the price I wanted.

Get some more specifics, and make this a front-page worthy post. See what happens. Marking it up by an entire Mustang is horseshit, especially if promised MSRP.

Wow, that makes the $11 markup over retail I paid for a gallon of milk seem reasonable.

Oh wait, that didn’t happen because I didn’t have to buy it from a lobbyist-protected dealership model.

As a sales consultant, market adjustments make me uncomfortable. While certainly I would like to be the consultant who sold the car with 30k in profit, I would feel dirty. I would spend most of the commission in soap and tithes.

Real talk though, I’m not a huge fan. Although it does make sense when you consider supply vs demand, I'm not a fan.

That’s the fucked up part of ordering a car in America and a prime reason why Auto dealer franchises need to go away. Its like buying a Big Mac at Mcdonalds and seeing $4.50 on the drive thru board and then getting to the window and have them tell you oh its going to be $7.50 now with a $3.00 convenience fee.

I can tell you that most of the Mossy stuff seems like stealerships. The fact is, they're only successful because of the amount of advertisement they shove on local tv and radio. I've been to much better dealerships than Mossy franchises, they're overhyped for what they are.

This dealership should shove this car so far up their own asses that they hiccup when someone hits the lock button on the fob. Complete bullshit.

Kinja'd!!! E92M3 > PushToStart
01/22/2016 at 20:18

I hate the big dealer conglomerates. The 5 largest dealers here convinced local law makers they were missing a huge chunk of revenue by not collecting a sales tax on private party used car sales. In reality they wanted to erase the benefit of not buying used from a dealer. It’s a win/win for both parties.

Guys, don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love the 350, and I would buy one in a second.

That said, I’m not going to buy one strictly for the same reason I never bought a GT500. I’m not paying these ridiculous ADMs on top of the MSRP.

I hear people constantly harping about how the 350 is such a great car for the price, and it would be, at MSRP.

And no, I shouldn't need to buy 10 Fords at one dealership over a period of years to get a special MSRP for this car.

No delivery charges here - they have to compete. But I always tip generously. Everyone should - those guys work hard. The recommendation was, in Gothamist, that if you order during the ongoing blizzard, you tip 50 percent. I agree.

Here’s another point: ordering the precise car you want and taking delivery is a gearhead/petrolhead’s dream. I’ve been driving since 1977, and while I’ve owned some interesting cars (among them ‘91 CRX Si, ‘97 SHO) I’ve never ordered a car. I regret to this day not going in my Toyota dealership (had bought 2 cars from them) and ordered a ‘97 Supra exactly like I wanted it). Bought the SHO off a lot instead. There is a huge emotional component to this situation - it’s not just the greed displayed by the dealership.

Kinja'd!!! SteveLehto > Steve in Manhattan
01/23/2016 at 16:18

Depends on the state. In Michigan, they always claim the sales order is not the contract - the later papers are.

01/23/2016 at 16:39

Kinja'd!!!1

I remember a long time ago, the Car Guys told a Boxster owner to make sure that the tech wrote: “customer suspects piston slap” on the repair order to preserve the warranty claim. I suppose this is a corollary - you have to write something on the sales order that says this is the final price, no dealer markup, etc.

This smells like that incident some months (years) ago where the dealership wrecked that guy’s Camaro (forget the model) and had to be shamed into doing the right thing.

What's sad is that I paid MSRP for my limited run 675LT. McLaren SF told me that when I ordered it and when it arrived. How is that any dealer would do this to a customer regardless of price. I know I won't ever visit that dealership again.
